Although beaten by the Romans, they rose up to ally themselves with Hannibal when he invaded Italy. Roland at The Battle of Roncevaux – 778 AD (HWISME035) Roland was a Frankish military leader under Charlemagne, responsible for defending Francia’s frontier against the Bretons. The story of Roland’s death at Roncevaux Pass (fighting this time against the Spanish Muslims) was embellished in later medieval and Renaissance literature, in which he became the chief paladin of the emperor Charlemagne and a central figure in the legendary material surrounding him, collectively known as the ‘Matter of France.” The first and most famous of these epic treatments was the Old French “Chanson de Roland” of the eleventh century, which makes great reading if you are into legendary battles! HWISNC029 Napoleonic Marshal Kutusov – Borodino 1812
Napoleonic Marshal Kutusov – Borodino 1812 ((HWISNC029) Kutusov’s military career was closely associated with the rising period of Russia from the end of the 18th century to the beginning of the 19th century. Kutuzov is considered to have been one of the best Russian generals for his defensive battle fought at Borodino, outside Moscow, in 1812. He fought Napoleon’s Grand Armee for a day, and saved the bulk of his army, which pursued and annihilated the French and their allies during their retreat from Russia that winter.
